Basic Requirements

2016 Competition Requirements


1.  Organ selections listed at right recorded on a high-quality audio CD. One of the following formats is required for a valid application: .cda, .asx, .wm, .wma, .wmx, .wav, .mp3, or .m3u. A listing of the repertoire is required. If playing a multiple- movement work, each needs to be on a separate track (i.e. Bach Prelude and Fugue—prelude on one track and fugue on the next).

2.  A letter of recommendation from current organ teacher, if applicable.

3.  For students under 18, a letter of consent from parent or legal guardian.

4.  While memorization of the repertoire for the actual competition is not a requirement, those finalists who do memorize their music will receive extra consideration. It is required that any music used be originals, not photocopies.   The exception is for page-turn necessity only.

5.  CONTESTANTS must provide the judges with three original copies of their music. (They need not be purchased. Music borrowed from school libraries or colleagues is fine.)

6.  Application must be postmarked by Agust 1, 2016.


Note: High School Division Grade 12 means students graduating in May or June, 2016. College / Young Professional Division is post-high school up to age 26.

Required Repertoire for the High School Division (Grade 9 -12)

1.  A work by Johann Sebastian Bach (7-12 minutes in length).

2.  Adagio (mvt. V) from Symphony No. 2 by Charles-Marie Widor.

3.  A work by a composer born after 1850 (3-8 minutes in length).

4.  Hymn — ST. THOMAS — play verses 1-4 in F Major and verse 5 in G Major with introduction(creativity encouraged), and with connecting modulation, if possible, version to be used is available by clicking here.

5.  One of the following hymns with introduction (creativity encouraged)and with connecting modulations, if possible. The music for each verse should reflect the text, and the hymn must be played in a "singable" and grand fashion. Free harmonization on the final verse is encouraged.

       a)  HAMBURG — play verses 1-3 in F Major and verse 4 in F# Major.

       b)  EIN' FESTE BURG — play verses 1-3 in C Major and verse 4 and D Major.

       c)  CORONATION — play verses 1-3 in F Major and verse 4 in G Major.

       d)  SYMPHONY — play verses 1-3 in F Major and verse 4 in G Major.

       e)  AR HYD Y NOS — play verses 1-3 in F Major and verse 4 in G Major.

       f)  VENI CREATOR — play verses 1-3 in A Major and verse 4 in B-flat Major


Required Repertoire for the High School Division (Grade 9 -12)

1.  A work by Johann Sebastian Bach (select one of the following)

       a) Prelude and Fugue in D Major, BWV 532

       b) Prelude and Fugue in G Major, BWV 541

       c) Prelude and Fugue in A minor, BWV 543

       d) Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542

       e) Toccata and Fugue in F Major, BWV 540

        f) Trio Sonata No. 1, BWV 525; No. 2, BWV 526; No. 3, BWV 527;

           No. 4, BWV 528; No. 5, BWV 529; or No. 6, BWV 530.

2.  Chorale #1,  by César Franck.

3.  A work by a composer born after 1850 (5-10 minutes in length).

4.  Hymn — ST. THOMAS — play verses 1 & 2 in F, verses 3 & 4 in G-flat, and

     verse 5 in G Major with introduction (creativity encouraged), and with

     connecting modulation, if possible.  Version to be used is available by

5.  One of the following hymns with introduction (creativity encouraged) and with

     connecting modulations, if possible. The music for each verse should reflect the

          a)  SLANE — play verses 1-3 in E-flat Major and verse 4 in E Major.

          b)  EIN' FESTE BURG — play verses 1-3 in C Major with verse 3 in free

               harmonization and verse 4 in D Major.

          c)  DIADEMATA — play verses 1 & 2 in D Major, verse 3 in E-flat Major and

               verse 4 in E Major.

          d)  EVENTIDE — play verses 1 & 2 in D Major, verses 3 & 4 in E-flat Major                and verse 5 in E Major.

          e)  AR HYD Y NOS — play verses 1 & 2 in F Major, verse 3 in G-flat Major and

               verse 4 in G Major.

          f)  VENI CREATOR — play verses 1-3 in A Major and verse 4 in B-flat Major.
